Wexton Celebrates Agreement to Bring Federal CHIPS Funding to Micron and Boost Manufacturing in Northern Virginia

Today’s announcement would deliver up to $275 million to expand Micron’s chip production in Manassas and create hundreds of good-paying local jobs

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) celebrated the U.S. Department of Commerce’s announcement of a Preliminary Memorandum of Terms (PMT) with Micron Technology to modernize their facility in Manassas, Virginia, which would bring up to $275 million in federal CHIPS and Science Act funding to Northern Virginia.

“Today’s announcement to bring new federal CHIPS funding to Manassas is big news for our efforts to expand local manufacturing opportunities which will bring new, good-paying science and tech jobs home to our district,” said Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. “I was proud to support the CHIPS and Science Act in Congress and help deliver a historic federal investment in American semiconductor production to strengthen our global competitiveness and bring down costs. I applaud Micron’s continued outstanding work in this important field, and look forward to seeing the new benefits that CHIPS funding will bring to businesses and our local community.”

Today’s agreement between the Commerce Department and Micron will enable the company to onshore important memory chips production to bring manufacturing and jobs here to Northern Virginia. The modernization project at Micron’s Manassas campus will include an expected capital expenditure of $2 billion over the next several years. The proposed project would onshore Micron’s 1-alpha technology to its Manassas facility, significantly increasing monthly wafer output. Micron’s 1-alpha node, an advanced DRAM process technology, offers meaningful improvements in bit density, power efficiency, and performance capability.

Supporting a stable supply of Micron’s 1-alpha technology would strengthen U.S. supply chain resiliency because the legacy DRAM memory chips that would be made in Virginia are important components for the automotive and industrial markets. Micron’s proposed project in Manassas would be expected to create over 400 manufacturing jobs and up to 2700 community jobs at the peak of the project.
