Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) issued the following statement after voting for a motion to vacate the chair and remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Kevin McCarthy won the Speakership by giving in to the extreme faction of his party, and he’s held onto power up until now by bending over backwards to appease those few extremists at the expense of the House and the American people.

“Kevin McCarthy has demonstrated disrespect and disregard for the institution of the House and for the essential bipartisan work we are called to do. He has proven at every turn that he cannot be a trusted leader. I saw nothing redeeming about his Speakership, and so I voted to vacate with the hope that the House can swiftly come together and chart a path out of the chaos caused by House Republicans.”
