Wexton Announces $1.3 Billion in New Funding for Roads and Bridges Headed to Virginia, First Round of Highway Funding Under Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

Sterling, VA – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) announced that Virginia will receive $1,348,139,636 in new federal funding under the bipartisan infrastructure law to create good-paying jobs for Virginians improving roads and bridges across the state. This is the first round of funding under the five years of federal investment in Virginia highways authorized by this new law.

“Our bipartisan infrastructure law delivers a historic investment to rebuild our region’s roads and bridges, making commutes easier for Virginia families and creating good-paying jobs,” said Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. “Virginians have waited years for much-needed federal funding to repair our aging roads, improve traffic conditions, and keep drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safe. I’m proud that Congress has delivered in a bipartisan way and that we’ll soon begin to see the results of this major achievement.”

The historic and bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law by President Biden on November 15th, secured new federal funding for highway and bridge repair for communities across the nation. The funds, administered by the Federal-aid Highway Program, can be used for the construction, reconstruction, or improvement.

In Virginia there are 577 bridges and over 2,124 miles of highway in poor condition. Commute times have increased by 7.7% in Virginia since 2011, and, on average, each driver pays $517 per year in costs due to driving on roads in need of repair. With this funding – and more to come – the bipartisan infrastructure law will create good-paying union jobs strengthening this crippled infrastructure.
