Wexton Statement on House Passage of Compromise Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act
Washington,
December 14, 2021
Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) issued the following statement on the passage of the House and Senate bipartisan compromise of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which Wexton was an original cosponsor of in the House: “I’m proud that we’ve come together to pass a bipartisan agreement on this critical legislation to keep goods made with forced labor off of American store shelves and hold the Chinese government accountable for their genocide of Uyghurs. “The mass imprisonment and forced labor of Uyghurs has infected global supply chains, and U.S. companies and consumers must not be complicit in this human rights atrocity. “I’ve heard firsthand from Uyghur families in my district about the horrors that their relatives have suffered in the PRC’s internment camps and will continue fighting to make it clear that the U.S. will not turn a blind eye to these heinous abuses.” The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act will counter the prolific exploitation of forced labor in China, used to produce many everyday products consumed around the world including cotton and yarn for clothing and minerals for cell phones, by blocking imports produced with forced labor. ### |
