Wexton Announces $1.3 Million for Local Community Health Center Upgrades to Better Support Underserved Communities

Sterling, VA -- Today, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) announced $1,349,063 in federal American Rescue Plan funding to support construction and renovation projects at local Community Health Centers. This funding will strengthen primary health care infrastructure and advance health equity and health outcomes in medically underserved communities, including through projects that support COVID testing, treatment, and vaccination.

“COVID has exposed long-standing inequities in our health system,” said Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. “I’m proud that this American Rescue Plan funding will help us tackle those inequities head on and better serve those most in need during this pandemic and long into the future. Upgrading the infrastructure of our community health centers is key to expanding access to high-quality health care for every Virginian.”

The facilities receiving funding which serve residents of Virginia’s 10th District are the Loudoun Community Health Center, which will receive $637,808, and the Greater Prince William Area Community Health Center, Inc., which will receive $711,255. Virginia will receive a total of over $15.8 million for 25 Community Health Centers across the Commonwealth.

Health centers will use this funding for COVID-related capital needs, constructing new facilities, renovating and expanding existing facilities to enhance response to pandemics, and purchasing new state-of-the-art equipment, including telehealth technology, mobile medical vans, and freezers to store vaccines. The funds are awarded to health centers that serve medically underserved and other vulnerable populations and communities, which are disproportionately affected by COVID and other health conditions. By constructing new facilities or renovating and expanding existing facilities, health centers will ensure that these communities will have more equitable access to high-quality primary health care.

Nationwide, more than 91 percent of health center patients are individuals or families living at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and nearly 63 percent are racial/ethnic minorities.
