Wexton Statement on House Passage of Legislation to Avoid Debt Default, Keep Government Funded, and Support Afghan Refugees
Washington,
September 21, 2021
Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) released the following statement on the House passage of legislation to fund the government, suspend the federal debt ceiling, and provide emergency assistance for Afghan evacuees and natural disaster victims: “Preventing a default on our debt means protecting Virginia families and businesses from economic catastrophe. We cannot allow the stability of our economy and the progress we’ve made to rebuild from COVID to become a casualty of partisan politics. It is imperative that the Senate swiftly take steps to pay the bill for money already spent, including Social Security payments, veterans benefits, and critical COVID relief programs. “Additionally, a temporary extension of government funding is a necessary step while we continue our work to pass appropriations bills that will make transformative investments in America's kids and families. Maintaining government operations is essential to pay the salaries of the tens of thousands of federal workers and contractors here in Virginia-10. “I'm proud that we've also delivered new emergency assistance that will aid communities in Virginia and across the country with the resettlement of Afghan refugees, as well as help families affected by recent natural disasters rebuild and get back on their feet.” ### |
