Sterling, VA-- Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) today released new data collected by Co-Equal detailing the benefits of the expanded and improved Child Tax Credit (CTC) in Virginia-10. The data reveals that 135,900 children will receive the monthly CTC payment. This benefit, included for one year in the American Rescue Plan, will be transformative for middle class families and lift more than 7,300 children in the district out of poverty. This striking data demonstrates the importance of permanently expanding and improving the CTC. “Expanding the Child Tax Credit through the American Rescue Plan is a bold step to help families recover and rebuild from the COVID crisis and a crucial boost to those who were struggling even before the pandemic hit,” said Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. “This expansion of benefits will impact 135,900 children here in Virginia-10, meaning that families will get much-needed help to afford regular expenses like food, child care, diapers, clothing, and more. Because we cannot just lift up these families in need for one year, I’m working with my colleagues to make the expanded CTC permanent and cut child poverty in half in our country.” In Virginia’s 10th District, 135,900 children, 60.5% percent, will benefit from the monthly CTC checks. Additionally, the expanded and improved CTC lifts 7,300 children in Virginia-10 out of poverty and 1,300 children out of deep poverty. Because of the larger benefit for the youngest, 2,900 kids under the age of six are raised out of poverty. The average benefit for 42,000 households in Virginia-10 is $2,400 annually. Families with children in poverty will receive $3,700 on average. The American Rescue Plan expanded the Child Tax Credit by increasing the value of the credit from $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child (and $3,600 per child under age 6), raising the CTC’s eligibility age to include children who are 17 years old, and making the CTC advanceable as monthly payments. Here is the data on the impact the expanded and improved CTC will have on each Congressional District. More information on Co-Equal’s methodology used to determine the data can be found here. ### |
