Wexton Statement on the Impeachment of President Trump
Washington,
January 13, 2021
After voting to impeach President Donald J. Trump for incitement of an insurrection, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) released the following statement. “In 2017, I ran for Congress because I was alarmed about the future of our country. I didn’t want to look at my kids in 10 years and tell them I didn’t do everything I could to protect our democratic institutions from the dangerous path we were going down. Even then I could never have predicted the sitting President would incite an insurrection. “If we are going to heal the deep wounds that exist in our country, we need to tell the truth. That truth is that the President of the United States incited a violent attack on the Legislative Branch of our government and on our democracy. He assembled a mob of terrorists, whipped them into a frenzy, and sicced them on the U.S. Capitol. “Not only did he put Congress at risk, he put the lives of my constituents in danger. Hundreds of Virginia-10 residents work in and around the Capitol complex. They are patriotic public servants who keep our government operating and protect these hallowed halls. The President is personally responsible for putting them in harm’s way. “The House of Representatives moved forward with impeachment because not doing so would allow these horrific actions to go unchecked and risk additional violence, destruction, and damage to our republic. The President must be held accountable. Only then will our country be able to heal. “My oath of office demands I support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. In honor of that oath and out of profound love for this country, I voted to impeach the President.” ### |
