Wexton Statement on War Powers Resolution

In response to the bipartisan passage of H. Con. Res. 83, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton issued the following statement:

“The American people are not seeking a war with Iran, nor did Congress authorize one. Today’s vote makes clear that Congress -- not the President -- has the power to declare war and authorize military force, as laid out in the Constitution.

“If American soldiers are going to be sent into harm’s way, then they and the American people deserve a credible explanation from our Commander in Chief and a public debate about the risks and consequences of that conflict.

“The administration has failed to provide that explanation or evidence of an imminent threat, and members from both sides of the aisle are rightfully frustrated at this refusal to provide transparency or consult with Congress.

“We will not allow this President to plunge us into another ill-advised war.”
